What is escape velocity?
Escape velocity is the minimum speed an object needs to break free from a body gravitational pull permanently, without any further propulsion — Earth escape velocity is about 11.2 km per second.
Why does a more massive planet have higher escape velocity?
Escape velocity increases with mass since gravitational pull is stronger, requiring more speed to overcome it — this is why escaping Jupiter requires a far higher velocity than escaping the Moon.
Does this account for atmospheric drag?
No, this calculates the theoretical escape velocity based on gravity alone, in a vacuum. Real spacecraft launches must also overcome atmospheric drag, which requires additional energy beyond this baseline figure.
