Frequently Asked Questions

What is a knee brace?

A knee brace is a diagonal piece connecting two perpendicular framing members, such as a post and a beam, to resist racking and add rigidity to the frame. Cutting both ends at the correct angle lets the brace sit flush against each member.

Why do the two angles always add up to 90 degrees?

The brace, and the two legs it connects, form a right triangle. The two non-right angles of any right triangle always sum to 90 degrees, so once one cutting angle is known, the other is simply 90 minus that angle.

Does this account for the brace material thickness?

No, this calculates the center-line geometry only, the diagonal length and angles based on the leg lengths alone. A real cut also needs a small adjustment for the brace material's own thickness where it meets each leg, which this simplified version does not include.
