Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the 4 and 10 square foot rule come from?

It is a widely used backyard-poultry guideline: about 4 square feet per standard-size bird inside the coop itself, or about 10 square feet per bird when the coop is paired with an attached run, since birds with less outdoor access need more indoor space to move around and avoid stress-related pecking.

Why do bantams need less space?

Bantam chickens are a smaller breed, roughly half the size of a standard chicken, so this calculator allows half the per-bird area for bantams. Mixed flocks are common, and this lets you size a coop for both bird sizes together.

Is more space always better?

Yes, these are minimums, not ideals. More space generally means healthier, calmer birds and less risk of behavioral issues like feather pecking, especially in the coop-only scenario where birds spend the most time confined.
