How is stair volume calculated?
A solid staircase is treated as identical rectangular step blocks, each the size of one rise times one run, stacked in a staircase pattern. The total volume works out to width times run times rise times the number of steps times one more than the number of steps, divided by two.
Does this assume a solid pour, not open-riser steps?
Yes, this assumes solid concrete stairs poured against a backfill or sub-base, not steps with open space beneath each riser.
What is a typical rise and run for stairs?
A common comfortable exterior stair uses about a 7 inch rise and 11 inch run per step, the calculator defaults.
