Frequently Asked Questions

What countersink angle should I use?

82 degrees is the standard angle for most wood and machine screws in the United States. 90 degrees is common in Europe and for some metric fasteners. 100 and 120 degree angles are used for specific fastener types, check your screw specification.

How is countersink depth calculated?

The depth is half the difference between the head diameter and the shank diameter, divided by the tangent of half the countersink angle. This comes directly from the cone geometry of the countersink.

What happens if the depth is wrong?

Too shallow leaves the screw head proud of the surface. Too deep leaves a visible recess or can weaken the surrounding material.
