Frequently Asked Questions
What does BTU mean for HVAC sizing?
BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures the heating or cooling capacity of an HVAC system — a higher BTU rating means the unit can heat or cool a larger space, or do so more quickly.
What happens if I oversize my HVAC unit?
An oversized unit cycles on and off too frequently (short cycling), which wastes energy, causes uneven temperatures, and increases wear on the system — bigger isn't always better for HVAC sizing.
Should I account for ceiling height and windows separately?
Yes — this calculator gives a simplified square-footage-based estimate. Rooms with high ceilings, lots of windows, or significant sun exposure typically need additional capacity beyond this baseline estimate.
