A board foot is a unit of lumber volume equal to a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long (144 cubic inches) — it's the standard unit lumber yards use for pricing hardwood and many specialty lumber products.
How is board feet different from linear feet?
Linear feet measures only length regardless of board size, while board feet accounts for thickness and width too — two boards of the same length but different thickness will have different board-foot totals.
Does dimensional (construction) lumber use board feet pricing?
Often not directly — standard dimensional lumber (2x4s, 2x6s) is frequently priced per linear foot or per piece at retail, while board feet pricing is more common for hardwood, specialty, or bulk lumber purchases.
