The post itself occupies space inside the hole, so the concrete only needs to fill the remaining gap around it, not the full hole volume.
What is a typical fence post size?
A nominal 4 by 4 post has an actual width of about 3.5 inches, the default here. Round posts are also common for some fence and railing systems.
How deep should a post hole be?
A common guideline is roughly a third of the post height above ground, or deep enough to reach below the local frost line, whichever is deeper. Check local building code for your area.
