Why is nosing overhang added to the riser rise?
Carpet on a staircase has to wrap over the nosing, the rounded overhanging front edge of each tread, before continuing down to the next riser, so the vertical coverage per step is the riser rise plus that nosing overhang, not the riser rise alone.
Why is there one fewer tread run than the number of steps?
A run of steps has one tread run between each pair of consecutive risers, so a staircase with a given number of steps has one fewer tread-run segment than its step count, the same relationship used in general stair geometry.
What extra allowance should I use?
A small allowance, an inch or two, is commonly added for trimming, seaming, and pattern matching during installation. Increase it for a patterned carpet that needs careful alignment across steps.
