The exact calendar-based method used, why it differs from a simple total-days-divided-by-365 estimate, and answers to common age-calculation questions are below.
How the years, months, and days breakdown works
The calculation counts full completed years first, then full completed months since your last birthday anniversary, then whatever days remain, all based on real calendar dates rather than an average month length. For a birth date of June 15, 1995, calculated as of September 8, 2026, that comes to 31 completed years (since June 15, 2026 already passed), plus 2 completed months (June 15 to August 15), plus 24 remaining days (August 15 to September 8), for a total of 31 years, 2 months, 24 days.
Why not just divide total days by 365
Dividing your total days lived by 365 gives an approximation, not an exact age, because it ignores leap years and the real, uneven lengths of calendar months (28 to 31 days). This calculator instead walks the actual calendar from your birth date to the reference date, month by month, which is why the years and age in completed years always match exactly, and why the months and days remainder is precise rather than estimated.

How is age calculated exactly?
Age is calculated by counting completed years, then completed months since the last birthday anniversary, then remaining days, all based on real calendar dates. Your age in completed years only increases once your birthday has fully passed.

Total days lived is a fun way to see milestones, like reaching your 10,000th day, and is sometimes used for symbolic birthday celebrations.
Does this account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation is based on actual calendar dates, so leap years are automatically accounted for in the years, months, days breakdown, the total days, and the days until your next birthday.
What happens if I was born on February 29?
In a year where February 29 doesn't exist, the calendar-based method treats March 1 as the equivalent anniversary date, consistent with how most real calendars and legal systems handle a leap-year birthday.

Why do the years, months, days breakdown and the age in years sometimes look redundant?
They're not redundant, they answer slightly different questions. The years, months, days breakdown gives your full precise age. The Age (Years) figure is the same completed-years count on its own, useful for forms that only ask for a whole number of years.
