Need to convert a time between two time zones, like EST to UTC, PST to IST, or any other pair? This calculator converts a time you enter from one named time zone to another, using standard UTC offsets, and tells you whether the result lands on the same day, the next day, or the previous day.

Pick your starting time zone and your target time zone from the dropdowns, and enter the hour and minute. The math itself is simple: the calculator finds the difference in UTC offset between your two zones and shifts your time by that amount, wrapping around midnight correctly when a conversion crosses into a new day.

US zones are split into their standard and daylight versions (EST and EDT, PST and PDT, and so on) rather than one combined option, since which one is actually in effect depends on the date and this calculator doesn't track daylight saving time changes automatically. Pick whichever one matches the real clock time you're converting from or to right now.

This covers the most commonly searched zones, including UTC, the four continental US zones, UK time, Central European Time, India Standard Time, Japan Standard Time, and Australian Eastern Time. If you need a zone not listed here, you can still work out the conversion using its own published UTC offset and this calculator's day-change logic.

How this time zone converter works

Every time zone is defined by its offset from UTC, Coordinated Universal Time. EST, for example, is 5 hours behind UTC (UTC-5), while IST is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead (UTC+5:30). To convert a time, this calculator finds the difference between your two zones' offsets and adds or subtracts that many minutes from your entered time.

For example, 9:00 AM EST converts to 2:00 PM UTC, since UTC is 5 hours ahead. If your conversion pushes the time past midnight or before it, the Day Change result tells you whether the converted time actually falls on the next day, the previous day, or stays on the same day as your original time.

If you're scheduling a meeting across time zones rather than converting a single time, our Meeting Overlap Timezone Finder can help find hours that work for everyone involved.

Understanding daylight saving time

Many regions shift their clocks forward by one hour in spring and back in fall, which is why zones like Eastern Time have two names and two offsets: EST (UTC-5) during standard time, and EDT (UTC-4) during daylight saving time. The same pattern applies to Central, Mountain, and Pacific Time in the US, and to UK time (GMT in winter, BST in summer).

In the US, daylight saving time typically runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, though exact dates shift slightly year to year. Since this calculator doesn't check today's date automatically, picking the correct standard or daylight option yourself is what keeps the result accurate. India, Japan, and most of the world's equatorial regions don't observe daylight saving time at all, so IST and JST keep the same offset year-round.

UTC offsets for common time zones

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UTC offset?

A UTC offset shows how many hours (and sometimes minutes) a time zone is ahead of or behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). For example, US Eastern Time is UTC-5 during standard time, or UTC-4 during daylight saving time.

Does this calculator account for daylight saving time automatically?

No. This calculator uses fixed, named time zones like EST and EDT as separate options rather than detecting today's date, so you pick whichever standard or daylight version is currently in effect for the zones you're converting between.

What does a day change of 1 or -1 mean?

A value of 1 means the converted time falls on the next calendar day; -1 means it falls on the previous day. This happens when converting across zones with a large enough offset difference, or when your starting time is close to midnight.

Why is India Standard Time 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC instead of a whole number?

India Standard Time uses a half-hour offset (UTC+5:30) rather than a whole hour, a choice made when India adopted a single time zone in 1947 that sits between two whole-hour options. A few other countries, like Nepal (UTC+5:45), use even less common fractional offsets.

What is Zulu time?

Zulu time is the military and aviation name for UTC, using the NATO phonetic alphabet letter for "Z," the zone designator for the zero UTC offset. It's the same time as UTC, just a different name used in military, aviation, and maritime contexts where a single unambiguous time standard matters.

How do I convert a time zone not listed in this calculator?

Look up that zone's real UTC offset, then use it the same way this calculator uses the listed ones: find the difference between your two offsets and add or subtract that many hours and minutes from your starting time, adjusting the date if the result crosses midnight.

What's the difference between GMT and UTC?

For everyday purposes, GMT and UTC represent the same time and are used interchangeably. UTC is the modern scientific time standard that replaced GMT in 1972, while GMT technically refers to mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian, but the distinction rarely matters outside specialized technical contexts.
