Why is fabric width different for knife vs. box pleats?

Each knife pleat takes 2x its finished width in fabric (one fold), while each box pleat takes 3x (two opposing folds meeting in the middle) -- so a box-pleated skirt uses roughly 50% more fabric than a knife-pleated skirt of the same waist size.
