Frequently Asked Questions
What does CWT mean?
CWT stands for "hundredweight" (100 lb units) — freight carriers commonly price LTL (less-than-truckload) shipments per CWT rather than per pound, since LTL shipments typically involve larger, palletized freight.
Why is fuel surcharge added separately?
Fuel surcharges fluctuate with diesel prices and are adjusted by carriers more frequently than base rates, so they're quoted as a separate percentage on top of the base freight charge rather than baked into the CWT rate.
When should I use LTL instead of standard parcel shipping?
LTL freight is typically used for shipments over 150 lbs or palletized goods, since parcel carriers (UPS, FedEx) become significantly more expensive at that weight and size compared to freight carriers.
