Frequently Asked Questions
Why do bank and book balances need reconciling?
Timing differences (deposits or checks not yet cleared) and items the bank knows about before you record them (fees, interest, bounced checks) mean your cash ledger and bank statement rarely match on any given day without adjustment.
What does a nonzero reconciliation difference mean?
It means an item has not yet been accounted for on one side or the other, such as an unrecorded fee, an uncleared deposit, or a data-entry error, and needs to be tracked down before the books are considered reconciled.
