Frequently Asked Questions
How is maximum car price calculated?
First, your affordable monthly payment is converted into a maximum loan amount using the present-value-of-annuity formula (the inverse of a standard auto loan calculation). That loan amount is then added to your cash and trade-in value for the total price you can afford.
What's a reasonable amount to spend on a car?
A common rule of thumb is to keep total car costs (payment, insurance, fuel, maintenance) under about 15-20% of your take-home pay, and the car's price itself under roughly 35-40% of your annual income.
