Frequently Asked Questions

How is FICA tax calculated?

FICA has three components: Social Security tax (6.2% of wages up to the annual wage base cap, $184,500), Medicare tax (1.45% of all wages, uncapped), and the Additional Medicare Tax (an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 Single/HoH or $250,000 MFJ).

Why does the Social Security tax stop increasing at a certain income?

Social Security tax only applies up to the annual wage base cap ($184,500) -- income above that isn't subject to the 6.2% Social Security tax, though Medicare tax (and the Additional Medicare Tax above the threshold) continues to apply with no cap.

Are these tax figures always current?

Tax rates, brackets, and thresholds are set by government authorities and typically change at least annually. This calculator is for estimation only -- always verify current figures with the relevant official tax authority before making financial decisions.
