Frequently Asked Questions
How is a GTIN check digit calculated?
Starting from the rightmost digit, alternate weights of 3 and 1 across each digit (rightmost gets weight 3), sum all the weighted digits, then the check digit is 10 minus (that sum modulo 10), taken modulo 10 again to correctly output 0 instead of 10.
Is this the same algorithm as a UPC barcode?
Yes. UPC-A (12 digits total, 11-digit base) uses the identical GS1 modulo-10 checksum algorithm as EAN-13 and other GTIN formats, just with a different total digit count.
