Frequently Asked Questions
How is HRA exemption calculated?
Exempt HRA is the minimum of three amounts: (a) actual HRA received, (b) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary (+ D.A.), and (c) 50% of basic salary for metro cities or 40% for non-metro cities.
Which cities count as "metro" for this calculation?
Under Indian income tax rules, only Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai are classified as metro cities for HRA purposes -- all other cities use the 40% non-metro rate.
