State Income Tax Comparison Calculator
FinanceQuickly compare your estimated state income tax across a selection of US states, using each state's top marginal income tax rate.
Estimated State Tax (At Top Marginal Rate)
A rough estimate using the state's top marginal rate applied to your full income -- NOT true bracket math, since most states are progressive. For an accurate figure on a specific supported state, use that state's own dedicated Calcupedia calculator (e.g. California Income Tax, New York Income Tax).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this use a flat top rate instead of real brackets?
This tool is designed for quick cross-state comparison across a wide range of states, which real progressive-bracket math for every state can't practically fit into one calculator. It intentionally overstates tax for progressive-bracket states (since it applies the top rate to your entire income) -- use it to compare states relatively, not as a precise number. For an accurate bracket-based estimate, use this project's dedicated calculator for specific states like California, New York, Alabama, or Illinois.
Which states have no income tax?
As of this writing: Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Alaska, South Dakota, and Wyoming have no state individual income tax. New Hampshire only taxes certain investment income, not wages.
Are these tax figures always current?
Tax rates, brackets, and thresholds are set by government authorities and typically change at least annually. This calculator is for estimation only -- always verify current figures with the relevant official tax authority before making financial decisions.
