Frequently Asked Questions
What does a coffee brew ratio mean?
A brew ratio expresses the proportion of coffee grounds to water by weight — a 1:16 ratio means 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams (about 16 milliliters) of water, a common starting point for pour-over and drip coffee.
Why does brew ratio affect coffee strength?
A lower ratio number, such as 1:15, uses more coffee per unit of water, producing a stronger, more concentrated cup, while a higher ratio number like 1:18 produces a milder, more diluted result.
Does grind size also affect the right ratio to use?
Yes — finer grinds extract flavor more quickly and may need a slightly different ratio or shorter brew time than coarser grinds to avoid over-extraction and bitterness, so ratio and grind size work together.
