BASDAI (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index) measures how active ankylosing spondylitis symptoms have been over the past week, using 6 self-reported questions, to help guide treatment decisions.
Why are morning stiffness severity and duration averaged together?
Both questions 5 and 6 assess the same underlying symptom, morning stiffness, just from 2 different angles, so they are averaged into one component before being combined with the other 4 questions.
What BASDAI score suggests a treatment change?
A score of 4 or higher is commonly used as a threshold suggesting suboptimal disease control, often prompting consideration of treatment escalation, such as starting or switching a biologic medication.
