The Centor score estimates the probability that a sore throat is caused by group A streptococcus (strep throat), helping guide whether testing or antibiotics are appropriate.
Why does age affect the score in both directions?
Strep throat is more common in children and less common in older adults, so the scoring system adds a point for patients under 15 and subtracts a point for patients 45 or older.
Does a high Centor score confirm strep throat?
No. A high score indicates a higher probability, not a certainty, and clinical guidelines typically still recommend a rapid strep test or throat culture to confirm before prescribing antibiotics.
