What is physiological dead space?

Physiological dead space is the portion of each breath that reaches the lungs but does not participate in actual gas exchange with the blood, either because it never reaches functional alveoli or because it reaches alveoli that are not being adequately perfused with blood.

What is a normal dead space value?

A commonly cited normal range for healthy adults is roughly 150 to 200 mL, with a simplified rule of thumb of about 2 mL per kilogram of body weight.

Why is CO2 used instead of oxygen for this calculation?

The Bohr equation uses CO2 because, unlike oxygen, essentially no CO2 enters inhaled air from the atmosphere, making any CO2 measured in exhaled gas a reliable marker of how much air actually reached functioning alveoli.
