Frequently Asked Questions

Why is BMI different for seniors?

Research shows that for adults 65 and older, a slightly higher BMI is not associated with increased mortality risk the way it is in younger adults, and can actually reflect better nutritional reserves. Senior-specific thresholds account for this.

What is a healthy BMI for someone over 65?

A BMI between 23 and 29.9 is generally considered normal for seniors, compared to 18.5-24.9 for the general adult population.

Is the BMI formula itself different for seniors?

No, the underlying calculation (weight divided by height squared) is the same. Only the healthy range thresholds used to interpret the result are adjusted for older adults.

Should I use this instead of standard BMI if I am 65 or older?

This calculator gives a more age-appropriate interpretation, but BMI in general does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Discuss your overall health with a healthcare provider rather than relying on BMI alone.
