Frequently Asked Questions
How is gestational age counted?
Gestational age is conventionally counted from the first day of your last menstrual period, not from the date of conception, even though conception happens roughly two weeks later.
How do I find my days since last menstrual period?
Count the number of days from the first day of your last period up to today. If you only know your due date, subtract the number of days remaining until your due date from 280.
Why does gestational age start before conception actually happens?
This convention exists because the exact date of conception is usually unknown, while the start of the last period is a clear, easily-remembered reference point.
How many weeks is a full-term pregnancy?
A full-term pregnancy is considered 40 weeks (280 days) from the last menstrual period, though anywhere from 37 to 42 weeks is considered within the normal range.
