What is the Subjective Happiness Scale?
The Subjective Happiness Scale is a validated 4-item self-report measure of global subjective happiness, developed by researchers Sonja Lyubomirsky and Heidi Lepper in 1999, widely used in psychology research.
Why is question 4 reverse-scored?
Question 4 is phrased in the opposite direction from the other three, describing unhappiness rather than happiness. Reverse-scoring it (subtracting the raw answer from 8) puts it on the same scale direction as the other questions before averaging.
What is a typical score?
Average scores in general population studies tend to cluster around the middle-to-upper range of the 1-to-7 scale, though there is no single official cutoff for what counts as clinically low happiness.
