Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Karvonen formula?

The Karvonen formula calculates target heart rate using heart rate reserve, the difference between your maximum and resting heart rate, rather than just a percentage of maximum heart rate alone. This makes it more personalized than simpler methods.

Why does resting heart rate matter?

Two people with the same maximum heart rate can have very different fitness levels, reflected in their resting heart rate. A fitter person typically has a lower resting heart rate, and the Karvonen formula accounts for this difference.

What intensity percentage should I use?

Common training zones include roughly 50-60 percent for light activity, 60-70 percent for fat-burning, 70-80 percent for aerobic/cardio training, and 80-90 percent for high-intensity training.

How do I find my actual resting heart rate?

Measure your pulse for a full minute right after waking up, before getting out of bed, for the most accurate resting heart rate reading.
