What is the Shock Index used for?
The Shock Index is a quick bedside calculation, heart rate divided by systolic blood pressure, used to help identify patients at risk of circulatory compromise, such as from significant blood loss, before blood pressure alone would suggest it.
What is a normal Shock Index?
A Shock Index between roughly 0.5 and 0.7 is generally considered normal. Values above 0.9 are associated with a meaningfully higher risk of adverse outcomes, including need for blood transfusion.
Why is the Shock Index useful when blood pressure looks normal?
A rising heart rate paired with blood pressure that has not yet dropped can still indicate early compensated shock. The Shock Index can flag this combination earlier than blood pressure alone.
Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?
