Why does an absolute value equation have two solutions?
Since |y| = c means y is exactly c units from zero in either direction, the expression inside the absolute value bars can equal either c or -c. Solving both cases gives the two solutions.
What if c is negative?
An absolute value can never equal a negative number, so |ax+b| = c has no real solution when c is negative. This calculator assumes c is zero or positive.
