What is eccentricity across the different conic types?

Eccentricity is 0 for a circle, always exactly 1 for any parabola, between 0 and 1 for an ellipse, and greater than 1 for a hyperbola. It is a single number that tells you which type of conic section you have and how stretched it is.

What does parameter a mean for each shape?

For a circle, a is the radius. For a parabola, a is the distance from vertex to focus. For an ellipse or hyperbola, a is the semi-major or transverse axis length. Switching conic types changes what a physically represents.
