Frequently Asked Questions
What is the double angle formula for cosine?
cos(2*theta) can be written three equivalent ways: cos^2(theta) - sin^2(theta), 1 - 2*sin^2(theta), or 2*cos^2(theta) - 1. All three always give the same result.
Why are there three different versions of the formula?
Each version is more convenient depending on what you already know: the sin^2/cos^2 versions are useful when only one of sine or cosine is known for the original angle.
How is this related to the sin 2 theta calculator?
They are companion double-angle identities, both derived from the sum formulas by setting the two added angles equal to each other, one for sine and one for cosine.
