Frequently Asked Questions
What is hyperbolic cosine?
Hyperbolic cosine (cosh) is defined using the exponential function: cosh(x) = (e^x + e^-x) / 2.
How is cosh different from cos?
They are unrelated despite the similar name: cos is periodic and bounded between -1 and 1, while cosh is unbounded, always at least 1, and grows without limit as x moves away from zero in either direction.
Where is hyperbolic cosine used?
Cosh describes the shape of a catenary, the curve formed by a chain or cable hanging freely under its own weight between two supports.
