Frequently Asked Questions
What is a crescent in geometry?
A crescent, or lune, is the moon-shaped region of one circle that remains after removing the part it shares with an overlapping circle.
When do two circles actually form a crescent?
A real crescent forms only when the distance between the two circle centers is less than the sum of their radii but more than the difference between them, meaning the circles partially overlap without one fully containing the other.
What is the crescent area for circles of radius 5 and 4 with centers 6 apart?
With those values, circle 1 crescent area is about 64.67 square units and circle 2 crescent area is about 36.40 square units, after removing their shared overlap area of about 13.87 square units.
