Frequently Asked Questions

How is complex number division calculated?

Multiply both the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. This turns the denominator into a real number (c^2+d^2), since a complex number times its conjugate always cancels the imaginary part.

Why can't you divide by a complex number the same way as a real number?

A complex denominator would leave an imaginary part in the denominator, which isn't a valid final form. Multiplying by the conjugate clears it, giving a properly simplified a+bi result.

What if the divisor is 0 + 0i?

Division by zero is undefined, including for complex numbers, so a divisor of 0+0i has no valid result.
