Frequently Asked Questions
How is ellipse area calculated?
Area equals pi times the two semi-axis lengths multiplied together, a direct generalization of the circle area formula, pi times radius squared, where a circle is just an ellipse with equal axes.
What if I only know the full width and height, not the semi-axes?
Divide the full width and full height each by 2 to get the semi-axis values, since the semi-axis is the distance from the center to the edge, half of the full axis length.
Does this work for a circle too?
Yes, entering the same value for both semi-axes gives exactly the standard circle area formula, since a circle is the special case of an ellipse where both axes are equal.
