How is a compound inequality graphed on a number line?
Each individual inequality is plotted as a ray on the number line: a filled circle for an inclusive bound (>= or <=) or an open circle for a strict bound (> or <), with a line extending in the allowed direction. The solution to both together is where the two rays overlap.
What does square bracket versus round bracket notation mean?
A square bracket [ or ] means that endpoint is included in the solution (inclusive). A round bracket ( or ) means that endpoint is excluded (strict), matching a filled versus open circle on the graph.
What if the lower and upper bounds don't overlap at all?
If the lower bound value is greater than the upper bound value, there is no overlapping region, meaning the compound inequality has no solution.
