How is hexagon area calculated?
A regular hexagon can be split into 6 equilateral triangles, giving an area of 3 times the square root of 3, divided by 2, times the side length squared, approximately 2.598 times side squared.
Why is the long diagonal exactly twice the side length?
In a regular hexagon, the long diagonal passes through the center and equals the circumradius, the distance from center to vertex, doubled. That circumradius happens to equal the side length exactly in a regular hexagon, so the long diagonal is exactly 2 times the side.
Where are regular hexagons commonly found?
Honeycomb cells, many nuts and bolts heads, and floor and wall tile patterns commonly use a regular hexagon shape, since hexagons tile a flat surface with no gaps while using less material per enclosed area than squares or triangles.
