Frequently Asked Questions
What is lateral area?
Lateral area is the combined area of the side faces only, not including the two trapezoid-shaped ends of the prism. For a trapezoidal prism, this is the sum of the perimeter of the trapezoid cross-section, times the prism's length.
How does total surface area differ from lateral area?
Total surface area adds the area of the two trapezoid end faces on top of the lateral area, giving the complete outer surface of the solid.
Why does the total surface area formula use only sides b and d for the end-face term?
That term represents the combined area of both trapezoid end faces, each with area equal to height times the average of the two parallel bases; the formula here is a rearranged, algebraically equivalent form of that same relationship.
