Frequently Asked Questions
What is modulo?
Modulo (mod) gives the remainder after dividing one number by another. For example, 7 mod 3 = 1, since 7 divided by 3 leaves a remainder of 1.
How does this differ from a plain remainder calculator?
This calculator uses the standard mathematical modulo convention, where the result always has the same sign as the modulus, even for negative dividends (for example, -7 mod 3 = 2, not -1). Some programming languages instead use truncating division, which can give a different, negative result for the same inputs.
Where is modulo used?
Modulo is fundamental to cryptography, computer science (array indexing, hashing), clock arithmetic (telling time wraps around every 12 or 24 hours), and checking divisibility.
