Frequently Asked Questions
What is a negative logarithm used for?
It is most commonly seen in chemistry, where pH is defined as the negative base-10 logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration, -log10(H+). The same negative-log idea also appears in other scientific scales.
How is the negative logarithm calculated?
Find the ordinary logarithm of the number at the given base, then flip its sign: -log_base(number).
Why is the result negative for numbers greater than 1?
An ordinary logarithm of a number greater than 1 (with a base greater than 1) is positive, so negating it produces a negative result. For numbers between 0 and 1, the ordinary logarithm is already negative, so negating it gives a positive result.
