Frequently Asked Questions
What is benzo[a]pyrene?
Benzo[a]pyrene, or B[a]P, is a carcinogenic compound found in smog and vehicle exhaust, and also in cigarette smoke, which is why air pollution exposure can be compared to a cigarette equivalent.
How is the cigarette equivalent calculated?
The calculator estimates the total mass of B[a]P inhaled per year from air, then divides by the amount of B[a]P in a single cigarette, about 14.86 nanograms.
Why does indoor time only count at 90 percent?
Indoor air is typically somewhat filtered compared to outdoor air, so indoor exposure is weighted at 90 percent of the outdoor concentration in this estimate.
