Why use a rectangular grid instead of a triangular one?
A rectangular grid is the simpler layout to plan and count, aligning bulbs in straight rows and columns. A triangular, offset grid can fit slightly more bulbs into the same area but is not covered by this calculator.
Should I leave a border gap around the edge of the bed?
Many gardeners leave a small unplanted border around the edge of a bed for a cleaner look and easier maintenance; reducing the bed length and width entered here by that border distance accounts for it.
