What is allele frequency?

Allele frequency is the proportion of a specific gene variant (allele) among all copies of that gene in a population. It is measured on a 0 to 1 scale, where 1 means every copy of the gene in the population is that allele.

How is allele frequency calculated from genotype counts?

Each homozygous dominant individual (AA) contributes two dominant alleles, each heterozygous individual (Aa) contributes one dominant and one recessive allele, and each homozygous recessive individual (aa) contributes two recessive alleles. Dividing the total dominant-allele count by the total allele count gives the dominant allele frequency.

How does this relate to the Hardy-Weinberg calculator?

This calculator goes from genotype counts to allele frequencies. The Hardy-Weinberg calculator does the reverse, starting from an allele frequency and predicting the expected genotype frequencies in a population at genetic equilibrium.
