Frequently Asked Questions
What is animal mortality rate?
Animal mortality rate is the percentage of animals in a population that died over a given period, calculated as the number of deaths divided by the initial population, times 100.
How is mortality rate different from case mortality rate?
Mortality rate is measured against the entire population at risk. Case mortality rate is measured only against the animals that were actually sick or infected, and is normally higher since it reflects the outcome specifically among affected animals.
Why does tracking mortality rate matter for livestock operations?
A rising mortality rate is often the earliest visible signal of a disease outbreak, feed problem, or environmental issue, letting a producer respond before losses grow larger.
