Frequently Asked Questions
What is an animal unit month (AUM)?
An animal unit month is the amount of forage needed to feed one standard 1,000-pound cow (with calf) for one month, commonly set at 915 pounds of dry forage.
Why does utilization rate matter?
Not all forage grown in a pasture can safely be grazed. Utilization rate accounts for the portion left ungrazed to protect plant health and soil cover, typically 25 to 50 percent depending on pasture condition and management style.
What is an animal unit value?
Different classes of livestock eat different amounts relative to a standard 1,000-pound cow. A mature cow with a calf is often set at 1.3 animal units, while a yearling might be closer to 0.7, reflecting their different forage needs.
