What is daily light integral (DLI)?
DLI is the total amount of photosynthetically active light a plant receives over a full day, combining light intensity and duration into a single cumulative daily figure, measured in moles of light per square meter per day.
What is photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD)?
PPFD measures the intensity of photosynthetically active light hitting a surface at a given instant, in micromoles of photons per square meter per second, and is what a light meter typically reports.
Why does DLI matter more than just light intensity alone?
Two setups with the same light intensity but different daily light durations deliver very different total light to a plant over a day, so DLI gives a more complete picture of a plant true daily light exposure than intensity alone.
