Why add a buffer instead of using the exact measurements?
A crate sized to the dog exact measurements would not actually let it stand, turn around, or stretch out comfortably. A few extra inches of buffer gives genuine room to move inside the crate.
How much buffer should I use?
A smaller buffer, around 2 inches, is often enough for smaller dogs, while larger dogs commonly get up to 4 inches of extra buffer, since proportionally the same buffer matters less on a bigger frame.
Should I size a crate for my puppy current size or its adult size?
For a growing puppy, a crate with a movable divider panel is commonly recommended, sized initially to the puppy current measurements and expanded as it grows toward its adult dimensions, rather than buying a full adult-size crate immediately.
