Why does this use weight to the power of 0.75 instead of a simple per-kg rate?
Metabolic rate does not scale directly in proportion to body weight; it scales more slowly as animals get larger. Using weight to the 0.75 power, a standard veterinary nutrition convention, more accurately reflects how a larger dog actual metabolic needs grow compared to a simple linear per-kilogram calculation.
Why does the recommended dose vary so much by purpose?
Different health goals call for very different omega-3 intake levels. A general health maintenance dose is far lower than a therapeutic dose aimed at managing a specific condition like osteoarthritis, where much higher doses have shown benefit in published veterinary research.
