Why is 1.54 times more dry material needed than the finished wet volume?

When dry cement, sand, and gravel are combined with water, the particles settle and fill each other's gaps, so the compacted wet concrete takes up less space than the loose dry ingredients did. A dry-to-wet conversion factor of about 1.54 is the standard figure used across the concrete industry to account for this.

What does the mix ratio mean?

A ratio like 1:2:4 means 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 4 parts gravel by volume. A richer mix, more cement relative to sand and gravel, such as 1:1.5:3, produces higher strength concrete; a leaner mix such as 1:3:6 is weaker but more economical, often used for mass, non-structural fill.

Does one cement bag really equal one cubic foot?

A standard US 94 pound bag of Portland cement is almost exactly 1 cubic foot by volume, a widely used construction rule of thumb, which is why this calculator rounds cement volume in cubic feet up to the nearest whole bag.
