Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find a material's density?
Bulk material suppliers typically publish density, often as pounds per cubic foot or tons per cubic yard, for each product they sell. If you only have tons per cubic yard, multiply by about 74.07 to convert to pounds per cubic foot, since one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
Why is this a generic calculator instead of naming a specific material?
Density varies enormously between materials, from lightweight mulch to dense crushed stone, so a single generic calculator that accepts any density covers materials not already listed by name elsewhere on this site.
Should I add extra for compaction or waste?
This calculates the raw material volume and weight only. For compacted base materials, check whether your supplier's stated density already accounts for compaction, and consider adding 5 to 10 percent extra material for waste and uneven spreading.
